Putuoshan is located in a small island off the east coast of Zhejiang and can be reached by ferry from Ningbo. The island is a national park and covers an area of 13 sq km. Putuoshan is one of the most sacred Buddhist mountains in China. Many of the temples at Putuoshan are dedicated to Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy who is said to have appeared on the island.
Putuoshan has been a Buddhist place of pilgrimage for over 1,000 years. The largest temple is the Puji temple, which was built during the Tang dynasty (618-907AD), and houses a statue of Guanyin surrounded by her 32 different manifestations. |
